Confucius a formulé une réflexion célèbre dans Les Entretiens (Lun Yu, chapitre Wei Zheng) :« Le Maître dit : À quinze ans, je me suis consacré à l’apprentissage. À trente ans, je me suis affermi.

Confucius made a famous statement in The Analects (Lun Yu, Chapter Wei Zheng):"The Master said: At fifteen, I set my heart on learning. At thirty, I stood firm. At forty, I had no doubts. At fifty, I understood the will of Heaven. At sixty, my ear was attuned. At seventy, I could follow the desires of my heart without transgressing the bounds."

The first five stages are relatively easy to understand. They describe how Confucius’ understanding of life deepened as he aged. At fifteen, he dedicated himself to learning and exploring the principles of life. After fifteen years of effort, by the age of thirty, he was able to act according to propriety and make well-considered decisions. However, he still found the world perplexing due to its complexity. It was not until he turned forty that he attained clarity and could distinguish right from wrong.

At fifty, he understood what he called the "mandate of Heaven" (Tianming), realizing that human power cannot overcome the will of Heaven and that the celestial order governs everything. By sixty, he could listen to differing opinions with equanimity, demonstrating a state of detachment and the ability to let go of trivial conflicts and desires. But why did Confucius consider the ultimate realization to come only at seventy, when he could "follow the desires of his heart without transgressing the bounds"? Was this simply a heightened sense of self-discipline, where one consciously avoids overstepping rules? Not at all.

"Following the desires of one’s heart without transgressing the bounds" does not mean that Confucius was aware of the rules and deliberately adhered to them. Rather, it signifies a state where his actions, though guided by his desires, naturally aligned with the rules. There was no need for restraint; his will was in perfect harmony with the cosmic order. He had achieved the pinnacle of unity between man and Heaven, the ultimate realization of human wisdom. One could say that at seventy, Confucius embodied the Daoist ideal of wuwei ("non-action"), expressed as "doing nothing yet leaving nothing undone."

This idea aligns with Laozi’s words in Chapter 38 of the Dao De Jing:"The highest virtue practice "non-action" with no intent. The lower virtue practice "non-action" but with intent."Laozi believed that a person of great accomplishment practices wuwei spontaneously and without calculation, while one of lesser accomplishment must consciously strive to do so.

Confucius and Laozi were contemporaries, with Confucius being about twenty years younger. Laozi is often regarded as a mentor to Confucius. According to tradition, Confucius consulted Laozi three times:

  1. The first time, when Confucius was around thirty, he was deeply interested in the rituals of the Zhou dynasty and sought Laozi’s opinion on these practices. Laozi, unimpressed, dismissed them as relics of the past. This encounter prompted Confucius to shift his focus to the concepts of ren (benevolence) and righteousness.

  2. The second time, around the age of fifty, Confucius sought Laozi’s insights on benevolence and righteousness. Laozi likened these values to a royal guestroom—suitable for a short stay but not for a prolonged residence. He encouraged Confucius to embrace wuwei and pursue simplicity, to avoid seeking fame or power, and to refrain from giving others the means to harm him.

  3. During their third meeting, Laozi reportedly acknowledged that Confucius had mastered the Way.
